Howard E. Bartelt, 97, of Chesterton, Indiana formerly of Whiting. New Jersey. passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Symphony of Chesterton. He was born May 15. 1926. in Passaic, NJ to Frederick & Henrietta (Huessy) Bartelt and served proudly with the U.S. Navy during WW II. Howard made his career as a banker for 42 years with Wachovia\ Wells-Fargo banks. He was active in the communities of Wayne and Pompton Lakes, NJ serving on the Wayne Board of Education, the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce and as Treasurer of the Salvation Army. He was an engaged member of the Preakness Reformed Church in Wayne, New Jersey and the Ocean Community Church in Manahawkin. NJ.
On June 4, 1949, in Clifton. NJ, he married Jeanne Reenstra who preceded him in death on September 19, 2020. Survivors include their children; Ken (Charlene) Bartelt of Valparaiso. Nancy (Charles) Sworin of Pahrump, Nevada & Janice Bartelt of Valparaiso, IN, grandchildren; Laura Bartelt. Karen (Benjamin) Parsley and Brian (Steph) Sworin, and great-grandchildren: Jude, Emelia, Leightynn, Benson, Tyler and Thomas and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers. Robert & Frederick Bartelt.
Howard and Jeanne spent their spare time camping with friends and family. Their favorite spots included the Poconos, Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks and Myrtle Beach, SC. You could always find him on the dance floor with Jeanne at charity events and weddings. They were so much fun to watch.
Following cremation at Angelcrest Crematory in Valparaiso a private family committal ceremony will be held later this year at Brigadier General William C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in New Jersey where Howard and Jeanne will be interred together.
