James A. Nowak, 80, of Valparaiso, Indiana formerly of Chicago passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024. He was born July 28, 1943 in Chicago to Anthony & Joanne (Dombrowski) Nowak, graduated from Mendel High School, served proudly with the U.S. Air Force for 4 years, and received a bachelor’s degree from Governor’s State University. Jim made his career with U.S. Steel for 50 years retiring in 1999 as part of their computer management team.
As a proud “Southsider”, Jim was an avid White Sox fan with a substantial memorabilia collection to exhibit his enthusiasm. His longtime membership in American Legion Post #805 showed his support for veterans and colleagues. Gardening and meticulously caring for his yard made him a bit of a legend in the neighborhood. But it was the quiet time at the end of the day when he could relax with a whiskey & water, Camel cigarette and enjoy time with Beverly that may have suited his placid personality best.
On September 5, 1970, he married Beverly J. McLeish who survives along with his siblings, Marge Nowak, Diane Gruger & John Nowak, sister-in-law, Ellen Madaras, brother-in-law, Glenn McLeish, and numerous loving nieces, nephews & friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Virginia Zientara, Mary Jo Nowak, Joseph Nowak & Anthony “Tony” Nowak. He was also preceded in death by their 5 beloved “fur babies”; Benji, Raleigh, Emma, Hannah & Finnegan.
Following cremation at Angelcrest Crematory a private honoring of James’ life will be acknowledged within the intimate group of friends and family that traveled the last miles of his life with him.
