James Andrew Mendez, Sr., 67, of Valparaiso, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022. He was born December 1, 1954 in East Chicago, IN to Antonio Mendez-Hernandez and Neva (Fleener) Mendez. Jim graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1973 and made his career as a Die Technician with Niagara LaSalle in Hammond. He attended Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Parish in Valparaiso. Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, and admiring deer. He loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Jim was always making people laugh and joking around. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friendly face to all. Jim will be deeply missed.
On November 13, 1976 in Gary, IN, Jim married Rosalinda Lara-Gonzalez, who survives, along with their children: Ruben (Kelly) Mendez, James Mendez, Jr., and Marina Mendez, all of Valparaiso; grandchildren: Tylor, Brianna, Vincent, Jessa, Izaiah, and Elizabeth; brothers: Christian (Maison) Mendez and Lauro Mendez; sister-in-law, Rosie Mendez; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers: Jose, Edic, and Leslie Mendez.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with the funeral service beginning at 6:00 p.m.

My heart hurts, for the family and myself, Jimmy was my friend, I didn't get to see him much after he retired but I will always remember and cherish the time we had together I'm going to truly miss you my friend.  -Rafael Riles
