James Perry Henderson passed away April 21, 2026, in Valparaiso, Indiana. He was born to J. Leonard Henderson and Ernestine Perry Henderson on December 10, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He earned a BA in economics from Beloit College, where he was also a member of the swim team. After graduation, he was hired by Pecatonica High School in Illinois to teach social studies and coach track and cross country. He earned an MA and PhD in economics from Northern Illinois University. He started his college teaching career at Hope College in Michigan. At one point, Hope students named him H.O.P.E. (Hope’s Outstanding Professor Educator). In 1975, he became an economics professor at Valparaiso University, where he taught until his retirement. During his tenure as a professor, he published numerous articles and a book.
He was elected president of the History of Economics Society in 1995-1996. In 1999-2000, he was elected president of the Association for Social Economics (ASE). In 2003, that organization presented him with the Ludwig Mai Award for his contributions to social economics.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Den, brothers-in-law Don and Bob, sisters-in-law Anita and Carol, and his beloved daughter Julie. He is survived by his cherished wife of nearly 62 years Judy and his devoted daughter Jennifer, as well as brother Chuck, sisters-in-law Marge and Linda, brother-in-law Woody, and many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will take place on May 16, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso. There will be a service immediately after at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon at noon at the church. Jim was passionate about giving back to the community.
