Larry G. Woods, 86 of Kouts, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023. He was born August 28, 1937, in Valparaiso to the late Walter and Marie (Criswell) Woods. Larry attended Boone Grove Schools before he made his career as a Boilermaker with US Steel for over 30 years. Following retirement from the mills, Larry worked as a Carpenter with McGriff Construction for 8 years, and then with Sears in Valparaiso in the hardware and tool department for 8 years. Larry was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kouts, where he had served as a Trustee and on the cemetery board. He was also a dedicated member of the Lion’s Club through which he was awarded the Melvin Jones Award for outstanding service. Larry was active in community service around Kouts and loved engaging with people. Larry enjoyed participating in several bowling leagues with his wife, traveling, camping, and reading. In his younger years, Larry was a racecar driver, and helped as a member of the pit crew for stock car racing. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a true gentleman, with a great wit and sense of humor. Larry will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
On April 4, 1970, in Valparaiso, Larry married the love of his life, Edith Joy Fifield, who preceded him in death in 2016. He is survived by their daughters: Lora Powers, Kellene (Mark) Myers, Michelle (Steve) Rodgers; 9 grandchildren: Jeremy Johnson, Shannon (Augustine) Orta, Andrea Mathis, Joshua Myers, Paige (Cody) Atwood, Matthew (Allison) Rodgers, Trent Rodgers, Meredith (Spencer) Hogan, and Caroline Rodgers; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister, Sandra Duncan. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Woods; and siblings: Waldo Woods, Gregory Woods, and Kay Darlene Woods.
A visitation will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Kosanke Funeral Home (new location), 309 S. Main St., Kouts. The funeral service will begin on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 507 S. Rose Ave., Kouts, with burial to follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lion’s Club Scholarship Fund or St. Paul Lutheran Church.
