Leroy Joseph Bailey, 75 of LaCrosse passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022. He was born March 9, 1947 in Rockland, Maine. Leroy proudly served in the United States Army in Vietnam, where he was struck by a mortar, shearing off much of his face and leaving him blind and disabled. Leroy endured over 300 surgeries in his lifetime related to the war injuries, but through it all he remained positive. His uplifting spirit and strength through adversity were an inspiration to those around him. Leroy was a selfless and generous man who spent much of his time knitting hats and scarves for the homeless shelters and blankets for animal rescues. He was a devout Christian who read the bible and prayed every day. Leroy was also a member of the Christian Church of LaCrosse. He enjoyed sitting outside listening to the birds and squirrels in his yard, operating his HAM radio, and listening to country music and Christian talk radio. His favorite restaurant was the Viking Chili Bowl, where everyone knew his name. Leroy will be remembered for his encouraging nature and genuine spirit. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Leroy is survived by his adoptive daughter, Robyn Whatley; adoptive nephew, Dennis Lemon; sister, Jackie Thompson; brother, Neil Bailey; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
