Louis Halkias, 70 of Valparaiso, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Thursday, August 31, 2023. He was born December 14, 1952, in Gary, IN to Nonda and Fani (Halkias) Spanos. Lou graduated from Merrillville High School in 1970, and made his career working in various roles in many restaurants throughout Northwest Indiana. Most recently he worked at Speedway, where his customers and coworkers looked forward to seeing him every day. Lou was a member of St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church, and enjoyed collecting coins, morning coffee, and cooking. He was a hardworking man who always put his family above all else. Lou will be remembered as a strong person with a happy, patient demeanor, and friendly personality. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will deeply missed.
On January 1, 1991, Lou married Myra Batemon, who survives, along with their children: Christopher Twaddle, Ryan (Kasey) Twaddle, Alexandra Halkias, Michael Halkias; 8 grandchildren; and siblings: George (Sherry) Spanos, Seva (Frank) Bertos, Nick (Amy) Spanos, Mike (LuAnn) Spanos, and Cathy (Vince) Sandone. He was preceded in death by his parents, and beloved aunt, Catherine Pavlos.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a Trisagion service at 6:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church, 36 W. 700 N. Valparaiso. Burial will follow at Angelcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church.
