Marlene Olive Haman, 88 of Kouts, IN, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 16, 2024. She was born August 24, 1935, in Valparaiso, IN to the late Elmer and Mildred (Bussert) Stowers. Marlene attended Kouts Schools, and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she served as Head of the Ladies Aid for many years and was part of the quilting group. She was also active in volunteering at Bethesda for almost 20 years. Marlene enjoyed gardening, sewing, cheering for the Chicago Cubs, and watching stockcar racing. “Cookie Lady” became her nickname when people tasted her legendary chocolate chip cookies. Above all, Marlene loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved supporting her family and 4-H at the Porter County Fair, where she liked to watch the sheep, cows, and Battle of the Barns. Marlene was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who will be dearly missed.
On February 1, 1953, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Marlene married the one who she tolerated best, Harold H. Haman, who survives, along with their daughters, Thelma (John) Sawyer and Cindy (Chris Schmoyer) Gettemy, all of Kouts; daughter-in-law, Pat Haman; grandchildren: John (Melinda) Sawyer, Jr., Stephen Sawyer, Mathieu (Tanya) Price, Ashley (Jeff) Rugg, and Tyler Haman; great-grandchildren: Alex, Jodie, Alexa, Gena, Stephanie, Memphis, and Dylan; many loving nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Daisy. She was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Stowers; son, Troy Haman; and granddaughter, Jennifer Snuffer.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 507 S. Rose Ave., Kouts, with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m., Rev. Brian Westgate officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to Porter County Community Foundation, Memo: 4-H Sheep Scholarship.

We loved Marlene for her kindness, concern for others, and joy of living. She was filled with energy and used it to help family and friends in any way she could, and was happiest when busy. A visit with her could progress into a crowd, as others dropped in and joined the conversations, and the feast that she somehow always provided. We will miss our long distance talks about "what's happening on your end?", to catch up on the local news. We are saddened to hear of Marlene’s passing, but assured that Marlene is now in God’s care.
