Matthew August Mecchia, 19 of Valparaiso, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2023.  He was born January 14, 2004 in Hammond, IN the son of Mark and Heather (Kirk) Mecchia.  Matt was a 2022 graduate of Washington Township High School, where he was a member of the varsity soccer and track teams and the WTS Drumline.  Over the last year he spent time reflecting on and bettering himself, while enjoying music, skateboarding, art, and playing Spades with friends and family.
Matt is survived by his parents, Mark and Heather Mecchia; sister, Alexa Mecchia; grandparents, Glen and Bonnie Kirk and Gilbert Mecchia; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Lynn Kirk and Marilyn Mecchia.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023 from 3:00-7:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a Funeral Service beginning at 7:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Matthew August Mecchia Scholarship Fund through the Porter County Community Foundation.

I’m so sorry for your loss Matt was an amazing kid super kind and funny. Matt always knew how to light up a room whether it was him dancing around or singing songs that been stuck in his head. I am so sorry for your loss, When I first met Matt I quickly realized how amazing of a person he was because he knew everyone and would treat everyone fair and equally. I met Matt and gained three times as many friends he always made sure to introduce his friends who didn’t know each other. Hello my names Caleb Aguilar, I’ve known Matthew for a very long time and I just wanna say I love you guys so much although I’ve never been around the family a lot. That man was someone who was incredibly creative and super intelligent in many ways. He’d make everyone in the room laugh uncontrollably to tears. He always was respectful when he needed to be.
