Orville James Shearhod, 82, of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025 surrounded by his family after courageously battling Lewy Body Dementia for the past 4 years. He was born on August 3, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Valparaiso, Indiana at age five, planting roots in the town that he spent the rest of his days.
In the summer of 1964, Orville married the love of his life and highschool sweetheart, Diana Lee Brown. Together they shared 61 years of marriage filled with devotion, respect, and strength. He was the proud father of two daughters, Shellie Crone (Chris Rosenthal) and Stacey (Tague) Salmins. Orville’s greatest joy came from being “Pops” to his grandchildren - Logan Crone (Gabby Trasser), Tatum Crone (Travis Rilea), Brayden (Brooke) Salmins, and Jaden Salmins and his great-grandchildren, Rhett Crone and Maya Rilea. He took pride in his role as step-grandfather to Ryan (Joee) Crone, Melissa (Jason) Robles, Jon Crone and Jeremiah (Brooke) Salmins.
Orville was proceeded in death by his parents, Orville Miles Shearhod and Jane Ann Quan Shearhod. He is survived by his loving siblings, Ramona (Gary) Bretz, Barbara (Jim) Fortune, Keith (Kathy) Shearhod, and Mike (Kandie) Shearhod, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Orville dedicated most of his career to Urschel Laboratories, where he worked in many positions including Plant Manager. Known for his quiet wisdom and strong leadership, he earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
A quiet man by nature, Orville had a presence that spoke volumes. When he chose to share his words, people listened. He had a lifelong passion for drag racing, motorcycles, and cars, especially his beloved Mustangs, 1965 Ford F150, Goldwings, VTX, and Harley. Orville had a true love for engines, speed, and the open road - a reflection of his adventurous heart and appreciation for the art of craftsmanship.
In his passing, Orville continues to give back. With the help of The Brain Support Network, Orville’s brain has been donated to Lewy Body Dementia research at Harvard University in hopes of advancing knowledge and finding a cure for future generations.
Above all, Orville will be remembered for the love he carried for his family and the steady example he set through his actions more than his words. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the family who will continue to honor his memory.
A Gathering will be held on November 2, 2025 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles 805 Elm St., Valparaiso 46383. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for charitable donations made to The Brain Support Network in Orville’s memory.
