Richard “Dick” Crockett, 74 of Hobart, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. He was born March 3, 1948, in Chicago, IL to the late Phyllis June Crisman and William Crockett. Dick graduated from Valparaiso High School, and after getting accepted to Valparaiso University in 1966, he joined the Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War in the summer of 1967, earning a Purple Heart. Dick went on to receive his associate degree in Business from Purdue North Central on May 10, 1988. He made his career as a Customer Service Representative with Midwest Steel for over 40 years. In retirement, Dick enjoyed watching the hummingbirds, posting memories on Facebook, playing chess online, calling his daughters daily, playing with his grandchildren who were the greatest joys in his life, and going to the Dunes and the lakefront. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed.
On July 31, 1971, in East Chicago, IN, Dick married the love of his life, Margaret Szarkowicz, who survives, along with their beloved daughters: Leslie (Jeffrey) Leathem of Grays Lake, IL, Anne (Ryan) Hurd of Brownsburg, IN, Candace (Ryan) McGuffey of Chicago, IL; cherished grandchildren: Will and Julia Leathem, J.R. and Brady Hurd, Jackson and Reese McGuffey; and brothers, John (Bethel) Crockett and Jim (Jan) Crockett.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a funeral service beginning at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Save The Dunes, 444 Barker Rd., Michigan City, IN 46360.
