Rita Y. Peters, 94 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2024. She was born May 4, 1930, in Delavan, KS, to the late Harry and Frances (Filkin) Yakle. Rita graduated with a degree in Music Education from the University of Kansas, where she also met her future husband. She made her career as a music teacher and had taught private piano lessons for many years. Rita loved music, gardening, spending time with her grandsons, and cheering for the Kansas Jayhawk basketball team, as Rita was a Jayhawk to her core. She will be remembered for her strong-willed and authentic personality, and loving nature. Rita will be dearly missed.
On June 22, 1952, in Delavan, KS, Rita married Wesley Peters, who preceded her in death in 2016. She is survived by their sons: Lynn (Cindy) Peters of Waverly, IA and Mark (Nancy Sugimoto) Peters of Bloomfield Hills, MI; and grandsons: Daniel, Matthew, and Adam. She was preceded in death by sisters: Roselle and Ruth.
A visitation will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Valparaiso, 103 Franklin St., Valparaiso, with a funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. and burial to follow at Angelcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Calumet Area, 600 Superior Ave., Munster, IN 46321.
