Robert J. O’Brien, 80, of Valparaiso, IN, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Born on August 31, 1943, in Oak Park, IL, to the late Robert Patrick O’Brien and Nell (Kilbourne) O’Brien, Bob dedicated his career to the transportation industry and loved every moment of it. Those who knew Bob knew how much he adored his work and the joy it brought him. Above all, Bob cherished the time he spent with his family. His beloved grandson, Jackson, saw him as a hero, and Bob reveled in their special bond. As a devoted husband, father, Papa, and uncle, Bob's love for his family was boundless and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
On April 30, 1977, Bob married Nancy Westergren, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Maribeth (Fred) Connor, Robert (Kathy) O’Brien, Kent O’Brien, Christine (Steve) Carlson, Jay (Lauren) O’Brien, and Meghan O’Brien; his many grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his brothers, Maurice (Alison) O’Brien and John O’Brien.
A private celebration of Bob’s life will be held for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Silverstray Social (silverstray.org), a non-profit organization that his daughter Meghan passionately supports through her volunteer work.
