Ronald Stephen Garland, 73 of Valparaiso, passed away quietly in his home in the early hours of June 15, 2023 with Susan, his wife of 53 years, lovingly by his side. He was born in 1949 to Lawrence and Mertie (Akers) Garland. Ron proudly served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He attended Liberty High School and graduated from Purdue University with an associate’s degree in Safety Management and made his career working as an EMT and OSHA safety inspector from where he retired. He was also a Boy Scout leader for Troop #42. Ron was always hard working, providing well for his family, and enjoyed crossword puzzles and gardening. He will be dearly missed.
On June 21, 1969, Ron married Susan Zahl, who survives, along with their three sons, Kevin (Linda), Steve (Heather), and Dan Garland; 3 brothers; 5 sisters; many loving brothers and sisters-in-law; and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mertie; and brother, Larry Garland.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a memorial service beginning at 6:00 PM. Ron suffered from COPD, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Lung Association.
