Shirley Uber (Mayer), age 91, passed away in her home in Valparaiso, IN on March 20, 2026.
Born at home on September 22, 1934, in West Liberty Borough, Pennsylvania to John Mayer and Sara Elizabeth Mayer. Shirley grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania alongside her sisters, the late Jannet (Robert) McCollum, the late Norma (Wendell) Cooper and her brother, Gary (Mary) Mayer. She attended West Liberty Elementary School (in a one room schoolhouse) and graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1952 and Butler Business College, in 1953,
On June 12, 1956 she married her high school sweetheart Robert Uber. Shirley’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving children: Sharon (Edward) Coon, Audrey (Daniel) Sullivan and Glenn (Lynn) Uber. She was a proud grandmother to Robert (Jennie) Coon, David (Rita) Coon, Jenny Coon, Elizabeth Sullivan, Benjamin, Jonathan and Daniel Uber. Her precious great grandchildren are Benaiah, Sharina, Bethany, and Cassia Coon.
Shirley’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of her life. She was a dedicated member of several churches including Liberty Bible Church and West Liberty Methodist Church. Her legacy of service includes developing church libraries at both Faith Bible Church in Joliet, IL and Waukegan Bible Church.
Shirley began her work as an administrative assistant at Petroleum Solvents Company and Thoroseal Products in PA. Her favorite career was being a stay-at-home mother. After raising her children, she served as the secretary for Faith Bible Church and worked on the Porter County Public Library Book Mobile. She retired from Valparaiso University after 18 years in the office of Institutional Advancement.
She and her surviving husband of 70 years enjoyed gardening, canning, camping, supporting numerous missionaries over the years and a mission trip to Bosnia. She made many delicious meals, sewed wonderful clothes, and encouraged her children in music. Shirley lived a life defined by her faith, prayers, service to others, patience, generosity, and her deep love for her family.
Visitation is March 25, 2026 from 4 to 6pm; funeral at 6pm at Liberty Bible Church, Chesterton, IN. by Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso, IN. Grave side committal services will be later at Scrubgrass Presbyterian Cemetery, Emlenton, PA. by Smith Funeral Home, Slippery Rock, PA.
