Thomas William Metcalf, 86 of Valparaiso, formerly of Merrillville, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. He was born November 4, 1938, in Gary, to the late Edgar and Ruth (nee Sanders) Metcalf. Tom graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1956. He went on to proudly make his career as a hardworking Plumber with the Plumbers Local #210. Tom remained a member of the union for over 70 years. When he wasn’t working, Tom enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, especially football, and cheering for the Chicago Bears.

He was a devoted family man who always made sure to put his family first in life. Tom raised his three daughters to each believe they were his favorite child, a testament to the love he showed them individually. The girls agreed that this was acceptable, because their brother, Tommy, was always mom’s favorite. Tom had a reputation of being a gracious host to anyone who entered his home, including friends, family, and even handymen. His quick wit, good sense of humor, humble demeanor, and polite personality endeared Tom to all who met him. He will be remembered as a loving, devoted, and caring husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

On October 25, 1958, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Gary, Tom married the love of his life, Frances McBride, who survives, along with their children: Patricia Metcalf of Valparaiso, Marianne (David) Gasser of Big Sky, MT, Tommy (Dorothy) Metcalf of Mooresville, NC, and Julie (Jeff) Sinchak of Valparaiso; grandchildren: Gabrielle Gasser, Mick Metcalf, and Maggie Metcalf; and many loving extended family members. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Robert Metcalf, Dean Metcalf, and Richard Metcalf; and sister, Marietta Holler.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Teresa of Avila at a later date.
