William Robert “Bob” Zurcher, 76, of Portage, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2025. He was a loving, devoted father, grandfather, brother, & uncle. He was born in Dover, Ohio on November 12, 1948, to the late Robert & Mary (Frischkorn) Zurcher. Bob was raised in Gary before making Portage his home for more than 50 years. A proud 1967 graduate of Horace Mann High School in Gary, Bob pursued his passion for football on a scholarship at Ball State University (where he became a member of Sigma Chi fraternity), earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education & Math Education and later earning a Master’s Degree in Administration. Beyond the football field, Bob dedicated his life to education and community service. He started teaching, then became Assistant Principal, and finally served as the Principal at Lake Station Edison Jr/Sr High School for many years, positively impacting the lives of many students and faculty members. Later in his career, he continued his commitment to public service by working for the Portage Parks Department. He was also a member of the local American Legion & former member of Augustana Lutheran Church..
While his professional accomplishments were many, Bob’s greatest joy came from his role as a loving father and active community member. He was deeply involved in Portage Junior Miss Softball during his daughters’ childhood, fostering a love for the sport and creating cherished memories for many families. Known for his warm heart and unwavering kindness, “Coach Bob” was a friend to all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his three daughters, Kristin (Joshua) Bodkin of North Augusta, SC, Karin (Spike) Pitts of Springboro, OH, & Elissa (Frankie) Hejduk of Westerville, OH; grandchildren, Natalie & Keegan Bodkin and Nesta, Coasten, Cali, & Hendrix Hejduk; sister, Susan (David) Carlson; brother, David (Susan) Zurcher; half-brother, Jack (Veronica) Zurcher; half-sister, Linda Zurcher; his beloved partner of 22 years, Sue Popov, and her children, Suzi Colville & Matthew Manoski; dear cousins, Mary Ann (Mark) Wright & Carol Seals; mother of his girls, Susie (Glenn) Mikaloff; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

GUESTBOOK
I am so sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I’ve known him since the 3rd grade. He was always very friendly and nice. We played little league together and football where he proved himself and went on to play college football. May he rest in peace. -Harry Frank
My best wishes and sympathy to Bob's friends and family. I was a year behind him at HM and lost personal track of him after leaving school. Nevertheless I followed his career from afar and knew how successful he was and even more importantly, what a positive impact he made on so many.....a truly great man. -John R Pera
Sorry for your loss. I saw Bob briefly walking down the halls of Mann Schl and read about him in the Gary Post Tribune. -Edward Lara
